News in the World: Bay Bridge closes
Posted in News in the world with tags Bay Bridge on October 28, 2009 by the Wiseguy
The shutdown of a major artery linking the California cities of San Francisco and Oakland sent area officials scrambling overnight to develop plans to ease congestion for Wednesday morning’s rush hour.
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge closed indefinitely Tuesday night after a piece of the span fell onto the roadway, prompting the thousands who use the bridge to hunt for alternative routes. The 73-year-old bridge spans the San Francisco Bay and carries an average of 280,000 vehicles daily, the state’s Transportation Department says.
“All traffic is being diverted to other bridges. Motorists are advised to expect delays, use alternate routes, and plan ahead for the morning commute,” said a message on the Web site of 511, a group of public agencies that provides travel information to Bay Area travelers.

F@#ked news in the world: man dropped his pants and exposed himself to the female passenger sitting next to him, then punched her

On a recent Southwest Airlines flight, a man dropped his pants and exposed himself to the female passenger sitting next to him, then punched her, according to an FBI affidavit. The plane was in midair, and the naked man reportedly grew angrier, screaming uncontrollably and shaking his fist in the air.
The man had gone “berserk,” said James Scanlon, a 52-year-old passenger who witnessed the August incident.
“He was jeopardizing my safety on that airplane. I was afraid he would rush the cockpit or try to jump out.”
Gotta admit this is pretty funny

The United States is overhauling Bush-era plans for a missile defense shield in Europe, based partly on the latest analysis of Iran’s offensive capabilities, President Obama said Thursday.
The “new missile defense architecture in Europe … will provide capabilities sooner, build on proven systems and offer greater defenses against the threat of missile attack than the… program” that former President George W. Bush proposed, Obama said.

Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter, primary author of the bill, told the Los Angeles Times, “Sometimes patients may think they are well enough for cosmetic surgery, but in reality are not. This bill will potentially save lives.”
After approving a few minor changes, the state Assembly will send the bill to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for the final decision. Governor Schwarzenegger had vetoed a similar bill last fall
