News in the World: Key global climate talks begin in Copenhagen

Posted in News in the world with tags on December 7, 2009 by the Wiseguy

The drumbeat rousing world leaders to action on climate change is fading out as delegates get down to the business of negotiating a global deal at climate talks in Copenhagen.
More than 34,000 people have applied to attend the meetings — more than double the number allowed to be in the center at any one time.
Non-government organizations have been told some of their members will have to wait outside, while registration has closed early for journalists after 3,500 applied for access.
The U.S. has said it will cut carbon emissions by 17 percent on 2005 levels by 2020. That equates to a cut of just four percent on 1990 levels, the baseline used by most other countries.

China announced a “notable” commitment of a 40 percent to 45 percent cut in carbon intensity on 2005 levels by 2020. Carbon intensity is a measurement of emissions per unit of gross domestic product.

Fu*ked news in the world: Third day of fee protests at California universities

Posted in News in the world with tags , on November 23, 2009 by the Wiseguy

Demonstrators entered their third day of a building takeover at UC Santa Cruz on Saturday in protest of a tuition increase, an undertaking that a school spokesman called futile.

The occupation of Kerr Hall is just one of several demonstrations across University of California campuses this week after the regent’s board approved a 32 percent increase in tuition Thursday.

University officials said the $505 million to be raised by the tuition increases is needed to prevent even deeper cuts than those already made due to California’s persistent financial crisis.

The shutdown of a major artery linking the California cities of San Francisco and Oakland sent area officials scrambling overnight to develop plans to ease congestion for Wednesday morning’s rush hour.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge closed indefinitely Tuesday night after a piece of the span fell onto the roadway, prompting the thousands who use the bridge to hunt for alternative routes. The 73-year-old bridge spans the San Francisco Bay and carries an average of 280,000 vehicles daily, the state’s Transportation Department says.

“All traffic is being diverted to other bridges. Motorists are advised to expect delays, use alternate routes, and plan ahead for the morning commute,” said a message on the Web site of 511, a group of public agencies that provides travel information to Bay Area travelers.

On a recent Southwest Airlines flight, a man dropped his pants and exposed himself to the female passenger sitting next to him, then punched her, according to an FBI affidavit. The plane was in midair, and the naked man reportedly grew angrier, screaming uncontrollably and shaking his fist in the air.
The man had gone “berserk,” said James Scanlon, a 52-year-old passenger who witnessed the August incident.
“He was jeopardizing my safety on that airplane. I was afraid he would rush the cockpit or try to jump out.”
Gotta admit this is pretty funny

The United States is overhauling Bush-era plans for a missile defense shield in Europe, based partly on the latest analysis of Iran’s offensive capabilities, President Obama said Thursday.
The “new missile defense architecture in Europe … will provide capabilities sooner, build on proven systems and offer greater defenses against the threat of missile attack than the… program” that former President George W. Bush proposed, Obama said.
